Darjeeling teas are named after a little town in the Northern part of West Bengal, India. The term “Darjeeling” is a registered trademark and only teas from the 87 gardens in the region are permitted to carry the distinctive title.
Nestling in the foothills of the snow-covered Himalayan range, Darjeeling grows one of the world's most exclusive teas at altitudes ranging from 600 to 2,000 meters. Darjeeling is a high-altitude region, and its teas are often described as "high-grown"; the altitude imparts a unique flavor and aroma to the teas .
The elevation, soil and climatic conditions are unique and so is the tea. A cup of Darjeeling is golden or amber in colour and has a unique, delicate flavour that is referred to as "muscatel," or, having the flavour of muscatel grapes, the typical flavour can also be described as "flowery".
The appearance, liquor, and aroma of Darjeeling teas are instantly recognizable by tea drinkers worldwide. These teas owe their distinctive flavor partly to the type of bush (Camellia sinensis) and partly to the climate and altitude. No other tea in the world carries the distinctive muscatel overtones and bright coppery color of these prized teas from these Himalayan foothills. Hence, they are named as “Champagne of teas”
